Rhythim Is Rhythim – Strings of Life: A Detroit Classic That Keeps Moving

If there’s one track that embodies the spirit of Detroit techno, it’s Strings of Life by Rhythim Is Rhythim. Released in 1987, this instrumental masterpiece is a staple of dance music history, revered for its soaring piano riffs, emotive energy, and undeniable groove. But beyond being a club classic, Strings of Life represents the pioneering vision of its creators—Derrick May and Michael James—who helped shape the sound of techno and inspire generations of electronic music producers.

The Birth of a Classic

Derrick May, one of the “Belleville Three” alongside Juan Atkins and Kevin Saunderson, is often credited with helping define Detroit techno. Strings of Life started as a simple piano composition by musician Michael James, who was studying jazz at the time. May, recognizing its potential, transformed it into a high-energy track by chopping up and sequencing the piano riffs over a driving, electronic beat.

Released on May’s Transmat Records, the track became an underground sensation before exploding onto the European dance scene in the late ‘80s. With its rich, layered melodies and lack of traditional vocals, Strings of Life stood out in a time dominated by acid house and early house music.

Impact on Detroit Techno and Beyond

Techno was already bubbling under the surface in Detroit, but Strings of Life pushed it into the global spotlight. Unlike the mechanical, industrial nature of some electronic tracks at the time, May’s composition carried an unmistakable emotional depth. The fusion of jazz-influenced piano with electronic rhythms showed that techno wasn’t just about machine music—it could be soulful and expressive, too.

The track quickly found its way into the DJ sets of legends like Frankie Knuckles, who played it regularly at Chicago’s Warehouse and Power Plant clubs, helping it become a crossover anthem. It became a key track in the UK’s growing rave scene and remains an essential tune for any DJ with a love for Detroit’s electronic heritage.

Soul Central’s House Revival

Fast-forward to 2000, and Strings of Life got a fresh new interpretation courtesy of Soul Central, a UK-based house music duo made up of Paul Timothy and Matt Mckillop. Their version, Strings of Life (Stronger on My Own), added the powerhouse vocals of Kathy Brown, turning the instrumental classic into a vocal-driven house anthem.

Brown, known for her soulful and energetic voice, gave the track new life with uplifting lyrics and an emotive delivery. The rework was a huge success, reaching #6 on the UK Singles Chart in early 2005 and dominating dance floors across Europe. It introduced Strings of Life to a new generation of club-goers who may not have been familiar with the original.
