If you were anywhere near a UK or European dancefloor in 1999, chances are you heard this track before you knew what it was — that robotic countdown, the jet-engine synth build, and then… boom. “The Launch” wasn’t just a banger, it was a mission statement. DJ Jean’s one-off crossover hit took the euphoric, turbo-charged energy of hard house and fired it into the stratosphere — and decades later, it still brings the same adrenaline rush.
DJ Jean, real name Jan Engelaar, is a Dutch DJ and producer who was already a household name in Amsterdam’s club circuit before The Launch propelled him to international fame. He was a resident at Club iT, one of the most influential gay nightclubs in Europe during the ’90s, and known for playing hard house, trance, and techno with flair and theatricality.
Though The Launch was his only major UK chart hit, Jean’s status in the Dutch dance scene has remained solid. His cheeky charisma, iconic sunglasses, and high-energy sets made him a cult figure during the boom years of European dance music.
