Avicii – Levels

Few songs have defined a generation of electronic music quite like ‘Levels’. When it exploded onto the scene in 2011, it didn’t just dominate charts and festivals — it recalibrated what commercial dance music could sound like. Euphoric, soulful, and instantly iconic, Levels, took a gospel sample, added one of the most recognisable synth riffs in dance history, and launched Avicii—a then-22-year-old Swedish producer—into superstardom. But the story behind “Levels” is more than just a banger — it’s the spark that lit the fuse for a new global era of EDM.

Tim Bergling, better known as Avicii, was already turning heads in the electronic world before “Levels.”  Tracks like “Seek Bromance” and “My Feelings for You” had earned him attention across Europe, but “Levels” was the moment he crossed over into the mainstream — not just as a club name, but as a global pop culture figure.

What made Avicii different from other EDM producers at the time was his ability to blend melodic songwriting with dancefloor power. He had an ear for emotion, and “Levels” channeled that beautifully — a bittersweet, uplifting rush that worked just as well at a festival as it did through headphones.

The Sample: Etta James – “Something’s Got a Hold on Me”

At the heart of “Levels” is a vintage soul sample that gives the track its emotional punch. The looped vocal — “Ohhhhhh, sometimes I get a good feeling…” — comes from the legendary Etta James, lifted from her 1962 track “Something’s Got a Hold on Me.”

Avicii took that line, pitched and looped it, and placed it against a powerful progressive house backdrop. The contrast between Etta’s rich, gospel-tinged voice and the clean, shimmering synth production created something fresh, timeless, and incredibly catchy. It’s the kind of sample flip that honours the original while giving it a completely new life.

“Levels” isn’t just one of the biggest dance tracks of the 2010s — it’s one of the most important. It brought EDM to the forefront, introduced millions to electronic music, and proved that you could make a club anthem with heart, soul, and lasting emotional impact.

It was lightning in a bottle. A perfect storm of melody, nostalgia, and innovation. And more than a decade later, it still gives people that same feeling.

That good feeling.
