“You don’t even know me… you say that I’m not living right.” With that line, Armand Van Helden dropped a house anthem so bold, soulful, and infectious that it not only topped the UK charts in 1999, but also carved itself permanently into club music history. “You Don’t Know Me” is more than just a banger — it’s a statement. Built on a bed of disco-funk samples, driven by a killer groove, and elevated by Duane Harden’s unforgettable vocal, this track remains one of the most iconic and unapologetic dance floor moments of the late ‘90s.

Armand Van Helden is one of the most influential and unpredictable producers in dance music. Born in Boston, Massachusetts, Van Helden burst onto the scene in the early ‘90s with a genre-blending style that pulled from hip-hop, disco, garage, and electro. While many producers found a lane and stuck with it, Armand thrived on reinvention — producing gritty New York house one moment and flipping into chart-topping dance-pop the next.
Released in early 1999, “You Don’t Know Me” is a perfect slice of funky house with attitude. It’s built around a chopped and filtered sample from Carrie Lucas’ 1979 disco track “Dance with You”, particularly the guitar loop — reworked and beefed up with a deep, rolling bassline and crisp, slamming drums.
